About the Role

Responsibilities

The Financial Counselor is responsible for providing patients/guarantors with a positive financial experience by helping them navigate and understand insurance benefits and potential financial liability during the admissions process and throughout the clientexperience with Newport Healthcare until all financial obligations are fulfilled. This role is the client's/guarantor's point of contact for financial assistance questions. The Financial Counselor advises patients/guarantors over the phone on their insurance benefits and coverage, creates estimates, collects payments, and sets up payment arrangements as appropriate.

Key Performance Responsibilities:
  • Perform insurance eligibility checks for upcoming and scheduled appointments/services to validate coverage and network exceptions.
  • Include alerts on appointments for co-payment and balance amounts due at time-of-service.
  • Determine the patient or guarantor's financial ability to pay; assess and offer payment alternatives according to established company guidelines.
  • Work directly with patients/guarantors on gathering insurance information by telephone and/or face to face when prior information gathered is not correct or is missing.
  • Provide cost of care estimates and discuss financial arrangements when needed and collect the appropriate amount of the patient's deductible and/or max out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Inform customers of Financial Assistance Program if patient is self-pay or expresses concern about the ability to pay.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding insurance and/or billing concerns, following up with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Communicate with Admissions, Utilization Review and/or Patient Account staff regarding non-financial questions and concerns.
  • Review and respond to assigned claims, accounts or patient correspondence within defined company timelines.
  • Advocate for coverage when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Experience, License Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • At least three (3) years in healthcare with emphasis on front-end processes, including areas of patient responsibility (deductible, co-pay, out of pocket max).
  • Basic math and keyboarding skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of health insurance eligibility, benefits and claims processing.
  • Knowledge of Revenue Codes, CPT/HCPCS codes and diagnosis codes .
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to maintain a courteous and respectful manner in difficult or highly charged emotional interactions.

Pay range for this role is $21.50/hr. - $28.00/hr., depending on education and experience.
