About the Role

Commissioning & Lifecycle Performance Engineer

Johnson Controls, a global leader in thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization, helps customers use energy more productively, reduce carbon emissions, and operate with the precision and resilience required in rapidly expanding industries such as data centers, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education.

For more than 140 years, Johnson Controls has delivered performance where it really matters. Backed by advanced technology, lifecycle services and an industry-leading field organization, we elevate customer performance, turn goals into real-world results and help move society forward.

We are seeking a Commissioning & Lifecycle Performance Engineer with strong experience in healthcare and mission-critical data-center environments. This role focuses on improving energy performance, system reliability, and operational resilience across the full lifecycle of building systems.

You will support existing clients by delivering high-level technical solutions, diagnosing complex system issues, optimizing sequence of operations, and ensuring whole-building systems operate efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify energy-saving opportunities through system analytics, trend reviews, and field assessments.
  • Evaluate and optimize sequence of operations, control strategies, and equipment scheduling to reduce energy consumption without compromising reliability.
  • Conduct retro-commissioning and continuous commissioning activities to improve long-term building performance.
  • Provide clients with actionable recommendations for energy conservation measures (ECMs) and system upgrades.
  • Ensure high reliability of mechanical, electrical, and controls systems in healthcare and data-center environments.
  • Perform root-cause analysis for equipment failures, control issues, and operational disruptions.
  • Support clients in developing redundancy strategies, risk mitigation plans, and reliability-centered maintenance approaches.
  • Validate system readiness for critical operations, including emergency power, chilled-water systems, and environmental control systems.
  • Diagnose complex issues involving HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power, chilled-water plants, and BAS/BMS controls.
  • Troubleshoot sequence of operations, control logic, and system interactions to resolve performance gaps.
  • Analyze trend data, alarms, and system logs to identify inefficiencies, failures, or operational risks.
  • Provide high-level technical guidance to facility teams, operators, and maintenance staff.
  • Serve as a long-term technical advisor to clients, supporting systems from initial commissioning through ongoing operation.
  • Conduct periodic system health assessments and performance reviews.
  • Support capital planning by identifying aging equipment, performance risks, and upgrade opportunities.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and consistent delivery of value.
  • Prepare clear, detailed reports summarizing findings, energy impacts, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of system performance, service activities, and lifecycle recommendations.
  • Support compliance with healthcare and data-center standards, including documentation for audits and regulatory reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in commissioning, building automation, or lifecycle services.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical distribution, emergency power, chilled-water plants, and BAS/BMS controls.
  • Proven ability to identify energy-saving opportunities and optimize system performance.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve complex, multi-system issues.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical issues into clear guidance for clients.

Preferred Experience

  • Healthcare facilities (hospitals, labs, surgical suites) and mission-critical data centers.
  • Retro-commissioning, monitoring-based commissioning, or analytics-driven optimization.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE commissioning guidelines, NFPA codes, and healthcare compliance standards.
  • Experience with reliability engineering or mission-critical operations.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $88,600 - $121,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
