About the Role

Staff Electrical Engineer - Medical Devices (R&D / Sustaining)

Location: Cincinnati, OH

Work Model: Hybrid (typically 3 days on-site, Mon-Fri)

Role Overview
We are expanding our Electrical Engineering R&D team to support a growing portfolio of handheld medical devices used in the operating and procedure room. This role is ideal for a highly experienced, hands-on Electrical Engineer who can step into an active program, take ownership quickly, and operate with minimal direction. The position will focus primarily on hardware design and sustaining engineering for products already on the market, while also supporting front-end R&D on a new, high-priority handheld device program that has already kicked off. You'll work closely with a small, experienced EE team and cross-functional partners, translating clinical and surgeon insights into practical, compliant electrical designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support electrical design activities across the R&D lifecycle for handheld medical devices
  • Own hardware-focused electrical engineering work, including schematics, PCBA-level design, and subsystem integration
  • Support sustaining engineering for existing commercial products, including updates, improvements, and issue resolution
  • Contribute to front-end R&D efforts on a new, high-visibility handheld device program
  • Translate design inputs and user (surgeon) feedback into electrical requirements and technical solutions
  • Design and integrate electrical subsystems (e.g., PCBA, sensors, cables, connectors) within compact, handheld assemblies
  • Work directly with external suppliers and vendors who manufacture components and assemblies
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory, safety, and compliance requirements for regulated products
  • Collaborate closely with project leadership on technical execution, timelines, and deliverables
  • Participate in design reviews and technical decision-making with minimal oversight
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 7-8+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with demonstrated design ownership
  • Strong experience with PCBA design, circuit boards, and schematic development/interpretation
  • Hands-on experience integrating electrical components into compact systems (e.g., sensors, cables, cameras, connectors-similar to consumer or handheld devices)
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities, and hit the ground running
  • Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Background in a regulated industry (medical devices strongly preferred; pharma, aerospace, automotive, or similar acceptable)
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance environments
  • Exposure to IEC standards related to electrical components and systems
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
  • Prior medical device R&D experience
  • Experience with handheld or portable devices used in clinical environments
  • Background at large, regulated organizations
  • Experience supporting products already on the market (sustaining engineering)
