About the Role

Professor of Socioeconomics of Biodiversity Conservation and Wildlife Management

We seek to make an appointment on the Socioeconomics of Biodiversity Conservation and Wildlife Management to complement the Department's ongoing research and teaching. The position focuses on the interplay between ecological, economic, and governance-related aspects of biodiversity conservation and wildlife management. We seek a candidate with an interdisciplinary profile and research experience from multiple countries at the nexus between biodiversity conservation, wildlife management, and society.

The candidate is expected to have:

  • A PhD degree related to the area
  • A strong theoretical and empirical foundation
  • Insight into both natural and social sciences
  • A track record in publication at an international level related to the position
  • A track record in raising research funding and managing large research projects
  • Documented ability to collect and analyse empirical data from a range of settings and contexts
  • Experience with developing methods and approaches that can inform policies and instruments on conservation and financing of biodiversity and/or are aimed at balancing the objectives of economic development with sustainable use of biodiversity
  • Experience with one or more topics related to economic assessment of marketed and non-marketed wildlife goods and services; illegal, unreported, and unregulated wildlife use and trade; evaluating wildlife management strategies
  • Experience with developing and engaging in private and public-sector collaboration on the topic of the position
  • Openness to combining methods and theories, to bring new perspectives, methods and skills to the research, teaching, and public consultancy of the department

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant's own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

General criteria apply to the appointment of professors at the University of Copenhagen. The criteria (research, teaching, Innovation & societal impact, organizational contribution and leadership) are considered as a framework for an overall assessment of the applicant. In addition, each applicant will be assessed according to the specific requirements listed in this advertisement.

The position will be based in the department section where the profile fits best.The employed candidate is expected to collaborate broadly within and outside the Department.In all sections, social scientists from several disciplines undertake research to address the critical challenges society face with respect to protecting our planet, its climate, environment and life, the sustainability of global natural resource-based sectors like the agro-food sector, fishery and forestry, and the links between development, conservation, and natural resources use.

The Department of Food and Resource Economics is uniquely placed in the enviable role of undertaking research, education, and public-sector services of international excellence in these fields and with significant impact in the scientific community, and on policy and practice.
