About the Role

Marine Engineer

Operates and maintains marine engines and mechanical equipment such as diesel engines, air compressors, generators, motors, turbines, boilers, etc. to provide propulsion and utilities for an assigned vessel by performing the following duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM)
  • Operate and maintain marine engines and mechanical equipment, such as: diesel engines; air compressors; generators; motors; etc. and to provide propulsion and utilities for an assigned vessel.
  • Read meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Record data, such as: temperature of equipment; hours of operation; fuel consumed; temperature or pressure; water levels; voltage load and generator balance; etc.
  • Adjust manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges; switch to backup equipment or systems; or, to shut down equipment.
  • Visually inspect equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
  • Maintain equipment by: tightening fittings; repacking bearings; replacing packing glands; gaskets; valves; recorders; gauges; and, cleaning or replacing components.
  • Maintain oils, fuels and lubricate equipment and tug.
  • Perform many of the boat wide general maintenance and upkeep duties required to keep the assigned vessel in good working order and condition.
  • May record operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator's logbook.

Other Tasks:

  • Perform many of the duties of other positions assigned to the vessel.
  • Perform all of the duties assigned to the deckhand position.
  • Perform other general boat operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function and preferably can also perform other tasks satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum: Six months of direct related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential
  • TWIC
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid Drivers License

Preferred:

  • Designated Duty Engineer 4000 HP
  • Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED)
  • Basic Safety Training (BST)
  • First Aid/CPR
  • AB Special
  • FMCSA Medical Card

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email
  • Knowledge of general machines and tools, which include: anchor lines, anchor rollers, depth gauges, hoists, marine signaling systems, and winches.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principals, techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • Skill in controlling operations of equipment or systems on the vessel.
  • Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Frequency is defined as follows:

  • Noise: Moderate to high noise levels from equipment and operations.
  • Vibration: Occasional exposure to normal equipment vibration.
  • Atmospheric Conditions: Possible exposure to diesel fumes, dust, and other airborne particles.

Hazards:

  • Moving Mechanical Parts: Exposure to engine components, drive trains/tracks, and other mechanical parts.
  • Electrical: Potential exposure to electric shock from generator sets and other site equipment.
  • Work at Heights: Occasionally exposed to situations which require fall protection.
  • Radiant Energy: Active Radar, rarely exposed.
  • Fuel & Chemicals: Exposure to diesel fuel, petroleum distillates, and related hazards.
  • General Construction Hazards: Must remain aware of potential risks associated with heavy equipment and construction environments.
