About the Role

Overview

Neurosurgery deals specifically with problems of the spine and brain region. These surgeries often are among the most dangerous to perform because of the delicate nature of the spinal cord and brain tissue. Within this field, there are many neurosurgery jobs, including surgeon, physician's assistant, nurse and teacher. These people work together to help patients recover from traumatic injuries and live better lives.

Responsibilities

  • Neurosurgeon: perform spine and brain surgeries; provide diagnosis, treatment planning and post-operative care;
  • Physician's assistant: assist during spine and brain procedures, order and review imaging tests, and assist with wound closure;
  • Nurse: administer pain medication, discuss procedures with patients and families, provide pre- and post-operative care and support independence after discharge;
  • Teacher: educate residents on spine, brain and surgical procedures and stay current with cutting-edge methods and theories.

Qualifications

For physicians (neurosurgeons) a bachelor’s degree, medical school and a prolonged residency are required. In the United States, a neurosurgery residency program can last up to six years and provides training from experienced doctors and opportunities to perform surgeries.
