About the Role

Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer

San Francisco Bay Area or Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Area, MN

At Cala, we're working to free people from the burden of chronic disease. We began by creating the first non-invasive prescription therapy for hand tremor. After years of careful fine-tuning and improvements, we released Cala kIQ our most sophisticated therapy yet. Our products have empowered thousands of people to get back to their lives with confidence and ease.

But we won't stop there. Our pioneering technology can be applied across neurology, cardiology, and so much more. It's all part of our mission to help people in their struggle with chronic disease. We're only just getting started.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to support Cala's contract manufacturing partners and production operations. This role focuses on designing fixturing, improving assembly processes, and supporting production ramp and continuous improvement for our wearable medical devices. You will spend significant time working directly with contract manufacturers to observe builds, solve problems, and implement practical tooling and process improvements that increase quality, throughput, and operator ergonomics.

The compensation range for this role is market driven, with a salary range of $98,000 - $150,000. Additionally, we offer a robust benefits package. This offering is aligned with our overall compensation philosophy.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Cala will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

A Day in the Life

  • Support Cala's contract manufacturers with day-to-day production issues, process improvements, and line optimization
  • Design, prototype, implement and document assembly, test, and alignment fixtures
  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes to increase yield, reduce cycle time, lower scrap, and create process transferability
  • Partner closely with manufacturing teams at suppliers and at Cala to document and deploy new tooling and processes
  • Identify opportunities for automation or semi-automation
  • Support NPI and production ramp activities, including design transfer and validation
  • Assist with process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) and related documentation
  • Collaborate with Quality, Operations, and Product Development to resolve manufacturing challenges
  • Provide on-site build support during critical production phases

Skills and Experience

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong SolidWorks experience and hands-on mechanical design background
  • 5+ years in manufacturing or manufacturing engineering (medical device preferred)
  • Experience working directly with contract manufacturers
  • Proven ability to design and implement production fixtures and tooling
  • Experience with small electromechanical assemblies and plastics (injection molding, bonding, sealing)
  • Familiarity with regulated environments (ISO 13485 / FDA QSR)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working on the factory floor
  • Clear communicator who works well across engineering, quality, and operations teams

Travel Expectations

  • This role requires regular travel to Cala's contract manufacturing partners to support production, process improvements, and new product introductions. Expected travel is approximately 2040% time, primarily to manufacturing sites in the greater Minneapolis / St. Paul Metropolitan Area / Medical Alley as well as headquarters in San Mateo, CA.
  • Travel may increase temporarily during critical build phases, production ramps, or issue resolution periods.
  • On-site presence is essential to observe manufacturing firsthand, collaborate with operators and manufacturing teams, and implement tooling and process improvements effectively.

Cala Health believes our success is based on diversity of people, teams and thinking. We offer all employees the tools, training and mentoring they need to succeed. Our selection process is driven by the key requirements for the role rather than bias or discrimination on the basis of a candidate's sex, gender identity, age, marital status, veteran status, non-jobrelated disability/handicap or medical condition, family status, sexual orientation, religion, color, ethnicity, race or any other legally protected classification.
