About the Role

Engineering data centers with precision and expertise.

At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.

As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We're seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm.

Position Opening:

The Building Management System Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and technical development of Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and control sequences for mission critical facilities. This role focuses on developing control system strategies that ensure reliability and redundancy as required by the project while supporting seamless integration with other building systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develop detailed control system design documents, including sequences of operation, network architecture diagrams and points lists.
  • Create project-related BMS specifications.
  • Define integration strategies between BMS, PLCs, mechanical and electricalsystems, and third-party monitoring platforms.
  • Specify control panel requirements, I/O requirements, and communication protocols for all equipment.
  • Collaborate with internal mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure system logic aligns with owner design requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and/or external stakeholders to ensure network architecture and cabling requirements are incorporated into overall project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain company-wide standards for BMS design, details, and documentation templates.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings and technical workshops with clients, vendors, and commissioning agents.
  • Assist clients with evaluation and selection of control system integrators.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews to validate drawings, sequences, and integration details before issuance.
  • Conduct site visits to gather existing system information, review construction work in progress, and confirm installed conditions are in compliance with contract document requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of experience in building automation or HVAC controls design, preferably within consulting or mission critical environments.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC system operation and control logic.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering. Candidates with significant relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of one of these degrees.
  • Knowledge of control communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and TCP/IP.
  • Knowledge of PLC and DDC based BMS systems.
  • Experience with Division 23, 25 and 26 specifications.
  • Knowledge of electrical power systems including distribution equipment, generators, UPS, and similar equipment in the context of monitoring and integration is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly describe complex control sequences.
  • Experience solely in the context of manufacturing or process automation is not preferred

COMPENSATION

Base Compensation: $90,000-$120,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as education, experience, skills and/or location)

SMC offers a competitive benefits package, with a 36-hour standard work week, hybrid working arrangement, 13 paid holidays, 100% coverage of medical, health, and dental insurance premiums for our full-time employees, and reimbursement of professional licensing costs. All full-time employees are additionally eligible for employer-sponsored life and long-term disability insurance as well as participation in our 401(k) plan, with annual safe harbor contribution.
