About the Role

Job Title: High School PE Teacher - Champion Student Wellness & Lifelong Fitness

Build Health, Confidence, and Community Through Movement

At Escuela Popular, we believe a great education nurtures the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Foundedin 1986 as a grassroots community school, we've grown to serve over 800 students, proudly fostering a dual-language, culturally relevant learning environment. Our unique PM Program provides a flexible and supportive pathway for nontraditional students, including working adults, to achieve their high school diploma.

We are looking for a dynamic Physical Education Teacher who sees PE not just as a class, but as a vital tool for building lifelong health, resilience, and community. If you are passionate about empowering students of all ages and backgrounds through movement, this is your chance to make a profound impact.

Your Role: Inspire a Lifelong Love of Fitness

As a PE Teacher in our evening High School PM Program, you will do more than lead exercises; you will create a welcoming and energetic space where students—many of whom are balancing school, work, and family—can build confidence, reduce stress, and develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.

You will be a key member of a dedicated team, designing a PE curriculum that is accessible, engaging, and transformative for both young adult and adult learners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design Dynamic Curriculum: Develop and deliver innovative, standards-based (CA Content Standards) PE lessons that promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal well-being.
  • Foster an Inclusive Environment: Create a safe, supportive, and positive atmosphere where every student, regardless of their fitness level or background, feels encouraged and capable of success.
  • Champion Holistic Wellness: Collaborate with faculty to integrate principles of nutrition, mental health, and lifelong wellness into the broader student experience.
  • Empower Student Growth: Provide constructive feedback and track student progress, celebrating milestones in physical and personal development.
  • Be a Community Partner: Actively participate in evening program activities, staff meetings, and professional development, fully embracing your role on our close-knit PM team.

Requirements

Who You Are

You Must Have:

  • A valid California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education with CLAD Authorization.
  • Commitment to the full-time morning shift. (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
  • Two current letters of recommendation.

You're the Perfect Fit If You:

  • Have experience working with high school and/or adult learners and are bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Excel at using culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices to connect with and manage a diverse classroom.
  • Believe that parents and families are essential partners in a student's education.
  • Are a resilient, compassionate educator with a "no-excuses" attitude toward student success.
  • Are a reflective practitioner, constantly using data and feedback to improve your instruction and student engagement.
  • Are passionate about building an extraordinary, vibrant learning environment that extends beyond the gym walls.
