Position Description Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Transportation Engineer I - Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer II - Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Engineer III - Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objective. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties: Transportation Engineer I: - Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
- Assists in evaluating pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
- Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Performs data collection, analyses, forecasts and plan development.
- Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement condition
- Performs other duties as assigned
Transportation Engineer II, all the above, and: - Evaluates pavement products and pavement condition data.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
- Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting
Transportation Engineer III all the above, and: - Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.

Minimum Qualifications:Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
