About the Role

Principal Engineers

Location: Toronto/Remote

Duration: 12+ Months

Job Description:

The Principal Engineer for Digital Platforms will provide technical leadership for the digital engineering teams as we build out a world class multi-billion dollar, omni-channel ecommerce site and underlying domain services.You will develop the architecture and system design, engineering standards and oversee all technology selections related to the buildout of our AWS environment, development of new micro services and extensions to the current website platform.

In addition, you will work with the SRE and Digital Operations team to design the development pipeline, automation strategy and tools, reliability and monitoring standards, and performance KPIs.The Principal Engineer will work closely with the engineering managers, technical leads and teams to review all designs to ensure they meet design standards, functional requirements, and non-functional requirements for scaling, fault tolerance, and maintainability.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the architecture and design of our front end services on AWS that enable us to extend capabilities beyond the current Salesforce Platform.
  • Serve as a technical lead on our most demanding, cross-functional projects.
  • Ensure the quality of architecture and design of systems.
  • Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, reusable solutions.
  • Fully and completely understand system interdependencies and limitations.
  • Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.
  • Help implement modern digital engineering practices and procedures to deliver technology solutions at increasing speed and efficiency.
  • Assist in project planning and staffing with the Digital Product Management team to build coordinated plans that show continuous delivery of functionality.
  • Ensure automation is in place to ship to production every minute of every day, ensure robust monitoring and alerting exists to show health of the system, ensure failure is expected and the system can gracefully handle failure, resulting in zero downtime.
  • Participate in annual and strategic planning processes with executive leadership and develop technology roadmaps that enable short, mid and long-term goals.
  • Develop a broad network of digital, talent, and technology partners and advisors to guide strategic decisions, architecture, and solution delivery.
  • Maintain effective communication with senior management to keep them informed of critical issues confronting product delivery and of the action plans for addressing those issues.
  • Teach, mentor, grow and provide advice to other domain experts and individual contributors across the organization

What You Will Need:

  • Critical thinking: You must be able to ensure that the products we release will positively impact our KPIs and not be afraid to speak up and be a voice of reason and authority when a product is not ready in the face of external pressure to hit a specific timeframe.
  • Technical, intellectual focus: Great deal of attention devoted to getting results that are timely and accurate. Demanding, critical and exacting with close follow-up and limited delegation. Reserved and confident when supported by detailed information.
  • Owner: You take responsibility and you follow through to make sure every aspect of the system is robust and things are accounted for.
  • Enthusiastic: You'll need an optimistic, charismatic and outgoing personality in order to lead by influencing others and you'll be a key part of making our workplace fun and energetic.
  • Motivational: You'll need the ability to motivate others by demonstrating a clear purpose for the team and how their work fits into the company's strategy while facilitating a sense of autonomy and creating an environment where people can continue to master their craft through professional development.   • Technical Expertise: Proven technology experience with Salesforce and modern technology platforms leveraging Java, javascript, API management platforms, integration technologies and protocols - SFTP, Kafka streaming, AWS cloud technologies. Knowledge of front-end frameworks like React is a plus.
