About the Role

Teacher Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing

The Teacher Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing provides specialized instruction and support to students with hearing impairments to ensure access to the general education curriculum. This role includes collaboration with staff, families, and service providers to promote academic achievement, communication development, and independence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and consultative instructional services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Conduct assessments and use data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Support development of communication skills, including spoken language, sign language, and/or total communication approaches.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Work with related service providers (e.g., audiologists, speech-language pathologists).
  • Provide training and support to staff regarding hearing loss and classroom accommodations.
  • Monitor and maintain assistive listening devices and hearing technology.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with IDEA and district policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • Valid state teaching certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (or eligibility for certification).
  • Knowledge of hearing impairments, language development, and instructional strategies.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience working with students with hearing loss in a school setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of auditory, language, and communication development.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and implement accommodations/modifications.
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and hearing devices.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
