About the Role

Assistant Director, Donor Relations - W.P. Carey School of Business

The Assistant Director of Donor Relations will work closely with the fundraising team in the W. P. Carey (WPC) Office of Advancements as an expert and administrator for all aspects of donor relations. They will focus on the 4 key tenets of stewardship-acknowledgement, reporting, recognition, and engagement. By fulfilling these tenets, we cultivate, sustain, and nurture lifelong relationships with donors and the university.

The assistant director works to advance ASUF's and WPC's relationships by strategically acknowledging, recognizing, and reporting to WPC benefactors to share the impact of their gifts. Additional their work should inspire donor retention and facilitate future giving by demonstrating successful deployment of previous gifts. Partnering with the foundation's internal constituents and the university's academic personnel, this position ensures that the needs of WPC's donors are met, and their expectations are exceeded. The assistant director will utilize innovative technology and ASUF's database system to maximize stewardship efforts, may help to manage donor relations and stewardship staff, serve as a member of the central donor engagement team and report directly to the Executive Director of Development in the Office of Advancement.

What you'll do
  • Assist in establishing standard policy and procedures for donor relations and stewardship activities
  • Work to identify strategic and streamlined methods to provide service to WPC office of advancement staff in creation and execution of stewardship plans
  • Assist in development and execution of an effective lifetime stewardship program, including individualized stewardship protocol for the college's most generous donors
  • Actively manage a portfolio of lifetime stewardship donors including regular engagements such as email updates, Zoom check-ins and in-person visits. These engagements could potentially result in gifts for which the assistant director of donor relations will lead, though the role is not primarily a fundraising one.
  • Direct and manage donor-centric events such as the annual scholarship luncheon and the WPC football suite
  • Assist in developing and managing the WPC recognition distinctions
  • Assist in the development and management of effective endowed chair and professorship programs, physical naming recognitions and unit/center/department naming recognitions
  • Assist in providing leadership in developing methods of communication and/or programming that optimize donors' understanding of how their gifts benefit the college
  • Utilize ASUF donor and financial databases and related technology tools to develop systems and strategies that enhance the delivery of donor relations programs
  • Assist in development and management of communication and donor reports ensuring timely delivery
  • Assist in the development and execution of an effective, timely and meaningful acknowledgement system in coordination with central ASUF units
  • Assist in the continued development of the ASUF donor relations portal as an effective donor relations tool for ASUF and WPC
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, writing, and by phone
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible
  • Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies
  • Ability to represent the institution well
  • An advocate's belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to donors and to internal audiences
  • Skill in using donor database system(s)
Relevant qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years' experience or master's degree and three (3) years' experience in not-for-profit and/or related field. Related experience must possess and demonstrate significant writing and training/supervisory experience.
Preferred education and experience
  • Experience working with donors in a higher education environment
