About the Role

Process Engineer

Blueland is reimagining everyday cleaning essentials with safe, products that are free from single-use plastic and eliminate the need to choose between what's safe for your family, good for the planet, and proven to work. With 45 patents granted & 39 patents pending worldwide, Blueland's innovative products have diverted over 1 billion single-use plastic bottles from landfills and oceans and 7.5 million pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere since 2019.

While traditional cleaners are packaged in plastic and may contain up to 95% water, all Blueland products utilize tablet or powder formats, designed to be used directly or mixed with household tap water, and come in compostable or recyclable packaging. From the kitchen sink to the laundry room, we create products families can trust and afford to use over and over (and over) again.Available on Blueland.com and nationwide at Target, Costco, Whole Foods and select local retailers.

In a world where half of the planet's carbon emissions come from just 36 companies, we believe that business should be a force for good and that mission and profit are not mutually exclusive—in fact, we're proof of it. We're committed to holding ourselves to the highest parental and environmental standards—which includes ongoing and unbiased certifications from trusted third-party organizations like Cradle to Cradle, EPA Safer Choice, USDA BioPreferred, Leaping Bunny, and EWG Verified. We're also a Certified Climate Neutral business and certified B Corp "Best for the World."

Blueland was featured on the Season 11 premiere of Shark Tank and successfully secured an investment. We're also well-funded by top tier venture capital firms as well as notable investors including Gwyneth Paltrow, Justin Timberlake and founders of Sweetgreen, Thrive Market, Honest Company, Rent the Runway, and Bonobos. Our products have been featured across top tier outlets including the New York Times, Fast Company, TechCrunch, VOGUE, Wall Street Journal, Inc., and more.

The Process Engineer will join our Innovation team and serve as the critical bridge between the Formulation team and contract manufacturing partners. This person will work closely with formulators from early development through commercial production, developing a deep understanding of each product's ingredients, specifications, and performance claims, then translating that knowledge into practical, scalable manufacturing solutions.

Day-to-day, the Process Engineer will identify opportunities to optimize formulas for manufacturability without compromising quality or efficacy, evaluate excipients and processing aids, and build a strong command of the equipment capabilities and constraints across the contract manufacturing network. When challenges arise during scale-up, validation, or production, this person will be responsible for troubleshooting and finding solutions that work on the floor.

This is a highly cross-functional role. The Process Engineer will collaborate regularly with Formulation, Quality, Operations, Procurement, and Contract Manufacturing teams, and the ability to align diverse stakeholders around practical, balanced decisions will be just as important as technical expertise.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with both powder and liquid formulations, a background in household cleaning, personal care, or a related consumer products category, and a track record of successfully navigating the scale-up process from bench to commercial production. This role reports to the Chief Innovation Officer.

Responsibilities:
  • Partner closely with the Formulation team during development to fully understand each formula, including functional ingredients, excipients, specifications, and product claims.
  • Identify formulation "levers" that can be adjusted to improve manufacturability while maintaining product performance, quality, specifications, and claims.
  • Understand the equipment, capabilities, and limitations of each contract manufacturer to ensure formulas are designed for successful production.
  • Evaluate excipients and processing aids that may improve manufacturing efficiency, flowability, mixing, filling, stability, or overall process robustness.
  • Translate formulation requirements into practical manufacturing guidance for powders and liquids.
  • Support troubleshooting during scale-up, validation, and commercial production.
  • Work cross-functionally with Formulation, Quality, Operations, Procurement, and Contract Manufacturing teams to resolve process and formula-related challenges.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience working as a Process Engineer with powder and liquid formulations.
  • Background in household cleaning, personal care, or adjacent consumer products preferred.
  • Strong understanding of formulation, scale-up, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to assess contract manufacturer equipment capabilities and limitations.
  • Experience troubleshooting production issues and recommending practical formula or process adjustments.
  • Knowledge of excipients, processing aids, and raw materials that support manufacturability.
  • Comfortable balancing manufacturability, product claims, specifications, quality, and cost.
Location & Travel:
  • Remote, full-time position with candidates ideally in the Midwest or Mountain regions.
  • This role requires frequent (60-80%) travel to contract manufacturing sites.

The salary range for this position is $110,000 - 140,000 per year.

We prioritize our planet and our people. In addition to salary compensation, we offer various other benefits to ensure our team members can be their best self, both in and outside of work. Benefits for full time roles include: health benefits, stock options, generous paid time off, paid holidays, paid civic engagement days, paid parental leave, 401k (employee contribution), professional development stipends, remote work reimbursements, various discounts to like-minded companies and more.

At Blueland we believe in order to build a better future and planet, we must advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. We are proud to have assembled a diverse team and strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every qualification.
