Reporting to the Director of Patient Care Services/Designee, the Shift Manager is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and providing individualized high quality care using the components of the nursing process.
Position Accountabilities 1. Determines staffing requirements to assure safe and competent patient care. Considers patient acuity, age specific needs of patients, staff skill mix, and individual patient's plan of care when making assignments. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in volume, emergencies, staffing, or schedule changes.
2. Utilizes observation techniques, chart review, and patient interviews to evaluate staff nurse performance and quality of patient care delivered.
3. Monitors the safety of the work environment. Proactively seeks to correct or prevent unsafe conditions.
4. Develops unit goals and plans for evaluating and achieving those initiatives.
5. Integrates education programs with appropriate clinical experiences to promote professional growth of staff.
6. Assists Director with schedules, time and attendance, quality improvement projects, reports, documents, and files.
7. Demonstrates basic understanding of budget requirements. Maintains supplies and productivity within guidelines. Develops strategies to effectively utilize down time on designated shift.
8. Seeks and accepts responsibility for committee participation, special projects, and teaching presentations.
9. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
10. Identifies patients at risk for abuse as well as associated signs and symptoms. States mandatory reporting requirements for healthcare professionals.
11. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient's functional and developmental age.
12. Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills and identified unit-specific skills.
13. Demonstrates the ability to provide appropriate interventions in-patient care emergencies and follows established emergency procedures. Takes appropriate action in emergency situations and develops others' ability to do so. Assists staff in prioritizing, as needed.
14. Determines the presence and type of Advance Directive, as appropriate. Contacts appropriate resources to assist the patient and family as needed.
15. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder and are to be documented on the Annual Evaluation Checklist.
16. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of all age groups of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the newborn (0 to 30 days), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients including, but not limited to, growth and development, medications, and special physical and psychosocial needs.
17. Maintains current competencies and skill levels required for work/specialty area. Performs duties in a manner that provides for the needs of the unstable surgical patient including, but not limited to, patient with invasive lines and/or requiring hemodynamic monitoring and patients who are ventilator dependent.
18. Actively participates in quality and performance improvement programs.
19. As necessary, provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, timely consults with other care providers as warranted and adjusts nursing care interventions appropriately to ensure optimal patient care, including placement of patients at the proper level of care.
20. Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons and documenting events.
21. Ensures shift time schedules are timely completed and balanced with a minimum core staff levels and skill mix to cover patient care needs acting as staffing/department management resource as needed.
22. Ensures adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment, including quality control monitoring as needed.
23. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills to manage complex patient care situations in accordance with DMC policy and procedures and standards of care.
24. Participates in planning staff education and in-services related to staff or patient needs; new technology or products; quality and performance improvement opportunities with follow-up evaluation/assessment of program effectiveness. Training presentations are documented and individual staff education records are maintained.
25. Demonstrates flexibility in the work setting with changing patient assignments, varying staff levels and patient care environments and completes work on time.
26. Fulfills on-call requirements of department. Weekends as needed.
27. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications Minimum Education: Minimum Experience/Skills: Minimum two (2)-years experience in PACU, recent supervisory experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Pain Management and Critical Care Class / 2 years+ experience.
License/Certificates/Credentials: Current: California RN license, ACLS certification, PALS certification, TCAR required within 12 months of hire/transfer . For current employees/transfers who have TNCC, TCAR must be obtained by October 1, 2019.
