About the Role

Our client, a nuclear technology company, is looking for an Instrumentation & Control Human Factors Engineer.This role integrates human factors principles into digital I&C system design and human-system interface development.Location: United States - Remote Duration: 12 Month Contract Compensation: $56 - $95 per hour.Additional Compensation: This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.Benefits: Benefits available to eligible employees or consultants may include medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid sick leave, retirement savings plans, and other employer sponsored programs.

US citizens and those authorized to work in the US are encouraged to apply.Work sponsorship is not available currently.Summary: This is a specialized design role integrating human factors engineering into advanced reactor instrumentation and control systems.The engineer will be responsible for human-system interface design, task analysis, and licensing compliance with NUREG-0711 and Chapter 18, with an emphasis on operator and maintenance task compatibility, regulatory guidance application, and multidisciplinary collaboration.The role also requires leadership coordination of human factors validation and verification activities.Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and oversee task analyses for displays and controls; develop monitoring, control, and protection strategies.
  • Collaborate on system communication and implementation of human-system interface design requirements.
  • Work with operations and engineering teams on human factors task analysis and interface development.
  • Lead design of I&C system functional requirements through final design with human factors integration.
  • Validate human-system interfaces align with simulator, plant operating, abnormal, surveillance, and emergency procedures.
  • Interface with internal and external customers, suppliers, partners, licensing, and regulatory authorities.
  • Provide technical direction to team members and assist program management with oversight activities.
  • Develop and review system- and component-level specifications and scopes of work.
  • Perform engineering evaluations applying nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations.
  • Develop and review technical design documents including design specifications and human factors analysis.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects; coordinate technical reviews of deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain user interface specifications and data connection mappings across displays and controls.
  • Collaborate with probabilistic risk assessment teams on human reliability analysis involving digital interfaces.
  • Support design reviews, engineering change evaluations, and operational experience reviews with HF and I&C impacts.
Qualifications:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent, OR 8+ years' experience in Operations, Controls, Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering.
  • 5+ years experience in I&C engineering for complex processes or nuclear systems including digital control/monitoring systems and human-system interfaces.
  • At least 3 years applying human factors principles to human-computer interfaces and workplace/workstation design.
  • Familiarity with nuclear human factors and I&C standards including NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700, MIL-STD-1472, IEEE standards, and ANSI/ANS-3.1.
  • Demonstrated experience in I&C development, diagnostics, and implementation with ability to design and deliver industrial I&C platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams and producing high-quality technical documentation.
  • Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints; demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead design teams with minimal direction.
  • Ability to work on multiple simultaneous tasks requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
Nice to Have:
  • Familiarity with developing process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping & instrument diagrams (P&ID).
  • Nuclear industry experience including emergency operating procedures and human factors reviews.
  • Design-by-analysis or human reliability analysis background.
  • Experience with HSI V&V (validation and verification) or Integrated System Validation.
  • Background in advanced reactor design or development programs.
