About the Role

Special Education Teacher - Lead

Summary/Objective

The responsibility of the Special Education Specialist/Director is to oversee district wide Special Education Services including all special education programs, staffing, evaluation, compliance, budgets, student records andprogram related professional development. Will ensure that department engagement in district wide MTSS processes to increase the student achievement for the special education population.

Essential Functions

  • Assume responsibility for planning, organizing, and supervising the instructional program for special education including adherence to special education related budgets, staffing, coordination and administration of all special education programs and services.
  • Ensure district adherence to all compliance matters related to county, state and federal requirements pertaining to Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004.
  • Oversee Individualized Educational Placement (IEP) team meetings as assigned and ensure the IEP process is fully adhered to by the department.
  • Take an active lead with the implementation of an effective model at the K-12 level.
  • Evaluate all special education teachers and other special education staff as appropriate using the district evaluation system.
  • Supervise the development and revision of all special education forms and the Special Education Procedural Manual, conducting committees as appropriate.
  • Onboard and provide ongoing, consistent training for all special education related staff.
  • Ensure coordination of efforts for staff to align special education and general education curricula for special education students as required by IDEA.
  • Provide leadership in establishing programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs. Develop and conduct professional learning programs for personnel involved in special education programs and services.
  • Coordinate efforts with principals, teachers, and support staff who have the responsibility for the development of programs and individual student educational plans.
  • Have direct oversight of special education para and office staff.
  • Ensure proper documentation, record retention, and data reporting are compliant, meet district expectations, and meet state/federal mandates.
  • Monitor and oversee billing from related service providers and contracted organizations.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with ISD personnel to ensure compliance and continued productive partnership.
  • Report special education data and needs bi-weekly to Superintendent.
  • Report special education data to stakeholders, as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and all legal requirements governing special education and develop changes and needed. Attend appropriate advisory committees as needed for program development or as directed by the state and county special education plans.
  • All other duties as assigned.
General Expectations
You are directly accountable to the Administrator. As a member of the Summit team, you are expected to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with school personnel. As a Summit employee, you will be expected to:
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner - demonstrating competence in your area of responsibility and extending respect and courtesy to coworkers. This position is one that demands an exceptional attendance routine, including consistently arriving early to set the tone for the day along with staying after to plan or support students.
  • Adhere to all Summit employee policies as well as expectations as outlined in the handbooks. We will supply a hard copy to you upon request.
  • Conduct yourself in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of Summit, as well as the core values of Summit. This will foster mutually beneficial relationships and promote a spirit of excellence in our endeavors.
Evaluation
All employees are evaluated based on the performance of their primary responsibilities and their adherence to the general expectations outlined in the job descriptions. It is also expected that each employee will do their part to maintain a spirit of team unity and cooperation. Each employee can expect to be observed and provided with immediate feedback frequently throughout the school year with a year-end evaluation.

This position involves direct supervision of the Special Education Department.

Required Education and Experience
  1. A Master's degree in school administration, supervision, educational leadership or equivalent. A candidate with a master's degree in another area may be considered if they possess a minimum of 12 semester hours of course work in school administration with preference given to those who have at least 20 semester hours.
  2. A valid State of Michigan administrator certificate with an endorsement in special education for both elementary and secondary levels.
  3. Must qualify for approval as a Director of Special Education.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 1997, and 2004 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.


Schedule
This role requires work between 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday and additional hours as needed. This is a full-time, salary position that requires 40 hours plus, if necessary to complete required tasks. This is a remote position, but the hours are not flexible.

In person commitments are a requirement. These include:
  • State testing
  • Field trips
  • Professional development
  • Graduation

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional home office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
