Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Audit Associate with a strong public accounting background to join a private company's accounting team. This position is ideal for someone with public accounting and audit experience who wants to transition into an internal accounting role with significant exposure to real estate and property accounting.
The Senior Audit Associate will work closely with property management teams and outsourced accounting partners, reviewing financial information, supporting the monthly close, and ensuring financial reporting is complete, accurate, and delivered on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the accounting and financial reporting activities for a portfolio of approximately 17-20 properties.
  • Review financial statements and supporting schedules prepared by outsourced accounting teams and ensure accuracy before finalization.
  • Coordinate and monitor the monthly close process, ensuring all property financials are completed by established deadlines.
  • Analyze financial statements, account activity, and variances to identify discrepancies and ensure appropriate corrections are made.
  • Partner with Property Managers to investigate cash collections, banking activity, and other property-level accounting issues.
  • Review accounts payable activity, including vendor invoices, coding, approvals, and supporting documentation.
  • Review intercompany charges and payments to ensure proper calculations and recording.
  • Assist with quarterly financial reviews and communicate accounting findings, questions, and recommended adjustments to management.
  • Support annual audits, tax reviews, budgets, and other financial reporting requirements for assigned properties.
  • Assist with regulatory and annual filings, including property-related reporting and unclaimed property requirements.
  • Review and coordinate reserve funding requests and property distributions, ensuring appropriate documentation and accounting treatment.
  • Work closely with offshore accounting teams to review deliverables, resolve issues, establish quality standards, and improve processes.
  • Assist with training and onboarding accounting team members.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, controls, and reporting processes.
  • Participate in occasional company meetings and team events, including limited overnight travel as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of public accounting experience with an audit focus OR 4+ years of private accounting experience
  • Experience working with private companies and/or real estate clients strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of property accounting and real estate financial reporting is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial statements, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Experience reviewing financial statements and identifying accounting discrepancies.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple properties, deadlines, and competing priorities.
  • Comfortable working with offshore or outsourced accounting teams and providing detailed review and feedback.
  • CPA or progress toward CPA is a plus.
