About the Role

LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking an onsite, direct hire detail-oriented Payroll/Staff Accountant to join our client's growing accounting team in Tampa, FL. This role is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing while supporting payroll accounting, reconciliations, month-end close activities, compliance reporting, and audit preparation. The ideal candidate thrives in a deadline-driven environment, maintains a high degree of confidentiality, and enjoys collaborating across departments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Process biweekly, supplemental, commission, bonus, and special payroll cycles utilizing ADP Workforce Now.
  • Review payroll data, timekeeping records, employee deductions, and payroll reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare payroll-related journal entries, accruals, and supporting accounting documentation.
  • Perform reconciliations for payroll liabilities, tax accounts, employee benefits, retirement contributions, garnishments, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including account analysis and variance investigations.
  • Support internal and external audits.
  • Manage payroll-related retirement plan activities, including contribution reconciliations, vendor coordination, and audit support.
  • Generate workforce and labor cost reporting, including headcount, overtime, commissions, and payroll metrics for leadership review.
  • Research and resolve payroll discrepancies while identifying opportunities to improve processes and strengthen internal controls.
  • Provide cross-functional support to the accounting department and participate in special projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in payroll accounting, payroll administration, or general accounting.
  • Hands-on experience processing multi-state payroll and preparing payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Proficiency with ADP Workforce Now and electronic timekeeping systems strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to analyze financial information and reconcile complex data sets.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage recurring deadlines and prioritize multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner effectively with Accounting, Human Resources, auditors, vendors, and employees.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Knowledge of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with retirement plan administration and payroll-related benefits accounting.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on process efficiency and accuracy.
