The Opportunity
Coastal Pipeline Inc. is seeking a hardworking Underground Utility Pipe Layer Assistant & Hillman to join our elite underground utility crews operating across Deerfield Beach, Broward County, and Palm Beach County.
In this vital hands-on field role, you will work directly alongside Pipe Layer Foremen and main-line pipelayers—staging pipes, handling fittings, rigging materials for heavy equipment drops, and preparing trench bottoms for water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage installations.Working with a stable, family-owned utility contractor built on field craftsmanship and safety, you will gain technical experience with pressure pipe, gravity systems, and trench shoring setups.

Key Responsibilities
- Pipe Staging & Trench Assistance: Handle, clean, inspect, and stage ductile iron (DIP), PVC (C900/SDR 26), and concrete storm pipes alongside the trench to ensure smooth placement by the pipe crew.
- Hillman & Rigging Support: Rig pipe sections, valves, hydrants, precast structures, and trench boxes safely using slings and chokers for excavator crane drops into active trenches.
- Material & Fitting Assembly: Assist top-man and lead pipelayer with mechanical joint (MJ) fittings, restraint glands, gaskets, lubrication, and laser alignment targets.
- Trench Safety & Shoring Setup: Maintain strict OSHA trench safety protocols—setting up trench boxes, aluminum hydraulic shoring, ladder access, and spoil pile setbacks.
- Inventory & Material Tracking: Track daily jobsite materials, verify delivery shipments, monitor fitting counts, and report supply needs to the pipe crew foreman.
- Ditch Maintenance & Site Cleanliness: Grade stone bedding, shovel trench bottoms, execute manual backfill compaction, and maintain a clean, safe jobsite environment.
What You Need to Succeed (Qualifications)
Required
- Utility Field Tenure: Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience as a Hillman, Tail Ditch Laborer, or Pipe Layer Assistant in underground utility construction.
- System & Material Literacy: Working familiarity with underground utility piping systems (water main distribution, sanitary sewer gravity mains, storm drainage culverts, and fire mains).
- Safety & Trench Awareness: Proven commitment to jobsite safety standards, with basic knowledge of OSHA trenching, excavation, and shoring guidelines.
- Physical Endurance & Stamina: Ability to perform intensive physical labor, lift materials weighing up to 50+ lbs, and work outdoors in South Florida weather conditions over extended shifts.
- Mobility & Driver Credentials: Valid Driver License with reliable personal transportation to travel to regional job sites across Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
Preferred
- Regional Utility Experience: Prior field experience on municipal water, sewer, or storm drainage pipe crews in South Florida submarkets.
- Safety Credentials: Active OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety card or Competent Person Trenching & Excavation training.
