Pay Scale: $22.00 to $28.00 per hour based on credentials, subject to Davis Bacon and CA Prevailing Wage rates

Wage Breakdown: $22.00 to $25.00 per hour without Class A CDL; $25.00 to $28.00 per hour with valid California Class A CDL

The Opportunity

Holloway Construction, Inc is seeking a skilled Pipelayer / Underground Utility Specialist to take on a vital hands on field role building critical civil infrastructure across commercial and school developments.

Working directly on wet utilities, concrete structures, and heavy site work, you will operate without layers of distant corporate management, bringing your practical trade expertise to high visibility regional projects. This position offers long term stability and significant career upside as our civil division expands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underground Utility Installation: Perform physical hands on installation of underground water, sewer, storm drain, and fire service piping systems.
  • System Components Assembly: Install pipes, fittings, valves, hydrants, cleanouts, utility boxes, and related structural civil components.
  • Concrete Structure Construction: Construct and install manholes, drain inlets, catch basins, and miscellaneous concrete structures, including forming, reinforcing, concrete placement, and finishing.
  • Grade and Line Precision: Set pipe to precise line, grade, slope, and elevation using lasers, levels, grade rods, and field survey equipment.
  • Trenching and Ground Operations: Assist with critical ground operations including trenching, shoring, pipe bedding, backfilling, compaction, and final site restoration.
  • Blueprint and Plan Literacy: Read and interpret blueprints, civil plans, utility profiles, specifications, and layout details to execute work accurately in the field.
  • Testing and Inspections: Assist with mandatory utility pressure testing, municipal inspections, active tie ins, and complex system connections.
  • Equipment and Tool Maintenance: Maintain field tools, heavy machinery, company vehicles, and secure jobsite work areas while executing general construction labor.

What You Need to Succeed (Qualifications)

Required

  • Wet Utility Experience: Proven hands on experience installing underground water, sewer, storm drain, and fire service infrastructure systems.
  • Concrete Structure Proficiency: Direct experience constructing or installing manholes, drain inlets, catch basins, and miscellaneous concrete structures.
  • Site Environment Track Record: Solid experience working on commercial build outs or school construction jobsites.
  • Plan Literacy: Core capability to read blueprints, civil plans, utility profiles, and complex construction details.
  • Technical Process Knowledge: Working knowledge of trenching, shoring, pipe installation, bedding, backfill, compaction, and testing procedures.
  • Grading Concepts: Clear understanding of grades, slopes, elevations, and survey staking.
  • Driver License Credentials: Clean driving record.

Preferred

  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Strong experience operating heavy construction equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, and compactors.
  • Transport and Hauling: Experience hauling heavy equipment and building materials using commercial trucks and trailers.
  • Prevailing Wage Experience: Prior experience working on public works and prevailing wage construction projects.
  • Safety Certifications: Advanced knowledge of modern trench safety standards and confined space procedures.
  • Commercial Driving Credential: Valid California Class A Commercial Driver License CDL.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical Stamina: Absolute ability to perform strenuous physical labor throughout the entire workday.
  • Heavy Lifting Capacity: Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull construction materials and field equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Maneuverability: Ability to bend, kneel, climb, stand, walk, and work securely in deep trenches or across uneven terrain.
  • Environmental Endurance: Ability to work comfortably outdoors in extreme heat, cold, dust, rain, and variable weather environments.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive Hourly Earnings: $22.00 to $28.00 per hour base rate, with access to higher Davis Bacon and California Prevailing Wage project rates.
