Pay: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year

Job description:

Tax Associate – Remote (U.S.)

Pen Pioneer (recruiting on behalf of a confidential, modern CPA firm)
Job Type: Full-time, Remote
Location: 100% Remote (U.S.) with optional office access in Boulder Valley, CO
Compensation: $60,000–$90,000 base (DOE) + performance-based bonus
Target Start Date: Flexible (ASAP for the right candidate)

About the Opportunity

Pen Pioneer is partnering with a modern, technology-forward CPA firm that is actively transforming the accounting landscape. The firm is growing rapidly through strategic acquisitions, advanced systems, and automation tools—freeing accountants to focus on high-impact work rather than outdated processes.

We are seeking a Tax Associate who is ready to take the next step in their career. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in public accounting, learns quickly, executes with accuracy, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.

You’ll work closely with experienced seniors and managers on complex projects and gain insight into how the numbers translate to strategy, client outcomes, and long-term planning. If you enjoy tax work, value precision, and want to grow inside a forward-thinking firm (not an “old school accountant” environment), this role is a great match.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare individual, partnership, corporate, and fiduciary tax returns with high accuracy.
  • Assist in tax planning initiatives under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Research and apply federal and state tax laws to support client engagements.
  • Review client financials for accuracy, consistency, and compliance prior to filing.
  • Communicate directly with clients to gather information and clarify details.
  • Identify inconsistencies or red flags early and collaborate with the team to resolve issues.
  • Manage workloads effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Utilize modern tax and practice management software to optimize workflows.

Top “Must-Haves”

We’re looking for a Tax Associate who brings:

• 3–5 years of public accounting experience (tax-focused)

Experience preparing and filing returns across multiple entity types (Individual, Partnership, S-Corp, C-Corp, Estate & Trust). You don’t need to be at partner level—but you should be comfortable navigating moderately complex tax situations with support.

• Strong technical foundation + growth mindset

You’re confident with tax law fundamentals but eager to keep improving. You welcome coaching, feedback, and continuous learning.

• Tech-forward, but judgment-driven

You’re comfortable with modern tools and automation, but you rely on sound professional judgment first.

• Clear ownership and communication

You proactively communicate, meet deadlines, flag issues early, and take pride in doing things right.

• Team-oriented culture fit

Personable, collaborative, low-ego, and dependable. This is a high-performing, friendly, no-drama team.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in public accounting with a focus on tax preparation and compliance
  • Experience with Individuals, Partnerships, S-Corps, C-Corps, Estates & Trusts
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and organizational habits
  • Comfortable working remotely and collaborating via video, chat, and cloud-based tools
  • CPA or EA track is a plus (not required for the right candidate)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $60,000–$90,000 (DOE)
  • Performance-based bonus
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • PTO + paid holidays
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Flexible work model (fully remote, with optional office access in Boulder Valley, CO)

Interview Process

  • Initial conversation with Pen Pioneer to assess fit and goals
  • Short (2–5 minute) introductory video (e.g., Loom) to demonstrate communication style
  • Interviews with firm leadership and key team members

If you’re a sharp, motivated Tax Associate looking to grow within a modern, scaling CPA firm, we’d love to speak with you.

Job Type: Full-time

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • 401(k) matching
  • Continuing education credits
  • Dental insurance
  • Flexible schedule
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Paid training
  • Vision insurance
  • Work from home
