About the Role

Job Title: Senior Tax Associate (Complex Returns) – Remote (U.S.)

Company: Pen Pioneer (recruiting on behalf of a confidential, modern CPA firm)
Job Type: Full-time, Remote
Compensation: $130,000 – $150,000 base (DOE) + performance-based bonus (structure open to discussion)
Target Start Date: Ideally by January

About the Opportunity

Pen Pioneer is partnering with a fast-growing, tech-forward CPA firm to hire a Senior-level Tax professional with real horsepower. This person will be a go-to reviewer for complex returns, someone who can spot inconsistencies quickly, exercise strong professional judgment, and communicate clearly with both clients and internal teams.

If you enjoy complex tax work, like to move with urgency, and want to be part of a collaborative, modern firm (not the “old school accountant” environment), this role was built for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review complex tax returns including:

  • Individual

  • Partnership

  • S-corporation

  • C-corporation

  • Fiduciary (trusts/estates)

  • Review work prepared by other team members and:

  • Identify inconsistencies, errors, and risk areas efficiently

  • Catch missed planning opportunities and provide clear feedback

  • Translate complex tax concepts into clear, client-friendly explanations.

  • Collaborate closely with other tax and accounting team members to hit deadlines and maintain high quality.

  • Use sound professional judgment to balance “getting it right” with “getting it done” in a fast-paced environment.

  • Leverage modern tax and practice management software to streamline workflows.

    Top “Must-Haves”

We’re specifically looking for someone who brings:

    • Senior-level horsepower

    • Able to independently review complex returns and provide direction without heavy oversight.

    • Trusted professional judgment that leadership can rely on.

  • Deep public accounting experience

  • Typically 7–10+ years of hands-on tax experience in public accounting.

  • Strong exposure across entity types (individual, partnerships, S-corps, C-corps, trusts/estates).

  • Personable and collaborative

  • Clear, confident communicator (especially via video and client calls).

  • Enjoys working as part of a team rather than in a silo.

    Qualifications

    • 7–10+ years of experience in public accounting with a focus on tax.

    • Extensive experience preparing and reviewing complex federal and state returns.

    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

    • Comfortable using modern tax software and cloud-based tools.

    • CPA license preferred (or equivalent experience); not required for outstanding candidates.
